Are Lycra shorts worth purchasing?

posted Jan 10, 2011, 1:03 PM by Michael Gardner

Yes, Lycra shorts work extremely well. Most cyclists prefer Lycra shorts because they have no sewn seams that overlap (seams cause chafing), and they don’t flap while cycling, but the most important aspect is the pad in the seat of the shorts (the pad is called a chamois). If you don’t like the tight fit of Lycra, then consider loose-fitting “touring shorts”. These have the appearance of normal shorts, but they are much better for cycling because they are constructed with a hidden pad in the seat of the shorts. You can purchase a pair of shorts for $19 - $100, but keep in mind that, in general, the more you spend, the more comfort you get.
