Why do pedals loosen in opposing directions?

posted Jan 10, 2011, 1:07 PM by Michael Gardner
To prevent pedals from loosening during use, the left hand pedal is reverse threaded (the right hand pedal is "correctly" threaded). Left pedal = left hand thread. Right pedal = right hand thread. An easy way to remember how to loosen them is, with the wrench at the 12:00 position, loosen toward the back of the bike, tighten toward the front of the bike.

Loosen toward the back of the bike.
